hospital visitation rights – a call for improvements by President Obama

On April 15th,  President Obama released a memo on hospital visitation rights.  His goal includes the promulgation of new rules requiring facilities that receive Medicare and Medicaid funding to respect the rights of  patients to designate who may visit them  as well as honoring patient’s advance directives and health care proxies.

This would be extremely beneficial to those with families who live far away; have no living family; are in a same-sex marriage; and others.  Being able to ensure that a close, trusted friend or your spouse can attend to you in your time of need is very comforting.
